I spent yesterday with my niece, Good Katy (GK). She's a sweet kid who just moved down from Coeur d'Alene to go to school at College of Idaho. Majoring in Social Work, or some such crap – Minoring in Aunt Evil Katy.
GK and I haven't spent much quality one on one time. Her brother, Dylan, used to come down for the summers, Camp Evil Katy. There was swimming, judging others, fetching me another beer… GK stayed at home and did those crafts with popsicle sticks and yarn. It has to be a huge regret. Dylan is really funny. Katy wants to "help people"…
I help people. I'm an Extreme Buddhist, sort of. I believe the traditional Buddhist tenet 'If you can't help others, at least don't harm them'. I also believe that In the middle, on the crumbly edge of helping and harming, is where the Real Work is accomplished, the 'playground' of the Extreme Buddhist.
"Drop out," I suggested yesterday. "You can hang out with me. Live at the Greenleaf place…Achieve Enlightenment….Everything You Need to Know You Learned in Kindergarten. It has to be true, it was a best seller…"
I ordered another beer. She just laughed. Thank god. I need that Greenleaf place.
